Name: Esmeralda Roque
Title: Outreach Support Specialist
Department: Central California Education Opportunity Center
How long have you worked at Fresno State?
Since March 4, 2026.
What drew you to work at Fresno State?
I have always been deeply impressed by Fresno State’s unwavering commitment to first-generation student success. My primary motivation for joining the university was the desire to actively contribute to making higher education more accessible. As a first-generation college graduate myself, being able to return and work at my alma mater is incredibly meaningful. It allows me to give back to the community that shaped me and directly support students who are walking the same path I once did.
What’s something about your department or role people may not know?
A lot of people don't know that TRIO EOC meets people exactly where they are, no matter how long they've been out of school. As an outreach support specialist, my job is to break down the barriers to higher education. I make sure prospective students have all the information and resources they need to take that next big step — whether that's enrolling in a traditional university or a specialized training program.
What accomplishment or project are you most proud of in your career?
While I’ve been involved in crucial behind-the-scenes projects like managing grant renewals over the last seven years, what I’m truly most proud of is my direct impact on marginalized communities. Complex systems often leave the people who need help the most feeling lost. My proudest moments come from stepping in as an advocate, helping them navigate those structures, and ensuring they successfully get the resources they need.
Are you from the Valley, or did you come here from somewhere else?
Yes, I was born and raised in Fresno County.
Are you connected to Fresno State through family or community traditions?
I am connected primarily through community traditions. As a first-generation individual, being able to join Fresno State is incredibly significant for both me and my family. It represents a major milestone, and I’m proud to connect my personal journey with the university's impact on our community.
What do you enjoy most about your workday?
What I enjoy most is collaborating with my team and the shared purpose we feel every day. It’s incredibly motivating to work alongside people who are just as dedicated as I am to providing vital services to our student population.
What’s one fun or unusual fact about you ?
I’m a huge true crime fan — though not for the reasons you might think! I just find myself completely drawn into the investigative process, and before I know it, I’ve binged a whole documentary series. I think it honestly reflects my detail-oriented nature; I love looking at a puzzle, analyzing the facts, and piecing clues together.
What do you like to do for fun outside of work?
Family is a huge priority for me; coming from a family of six means our calendars are always full of birthdays and get-togethers. In my quiet time, I love relaxing at home with my plants or heading out into the community to support new local restaurants and coffee shops. I always love finding a new favorite spot in town.
Anything else you’d like your colleagues to know about you?
I have a deep love for coffee, and I always check the weather before I leave my house.
