The campus community is invited to a free presentation by political science faculty Dr. Lisa Bryant and Dr. Everett A. Vieira III.
Electoral violence is not new, but it is on the rise in the U.S. What does electoral violence look like around the world, and how will we know if the US is headed in the same direction? This talk will examine electoral violence in the U.S. and across Latin America, highlighting key points in history, and focusing on more recent incidents, including some in California.
In her research, Bryant has studied topics related to election administration, public opinion and political behavior, campaigns and elections, and gender and representation. Her latest research focuses on threats and harassment against election officials. In 2024, Bryant was awarded an Andrew Carnegie Fellowship by the Carnegie Corporation of New York for her project, "Polarizing the Process: Partisan Effects on Election Officials and Trust in Elections.”
Vieira has conducted research on political violence, state capacity, the politics of memory, and Latin America. His work has been published by, or is forthcoming at, The Latin Americanist, PURIQ, Studies in Spanish & Latin American Cinemas research journals, and the University of Texas Press.
