The Africana Studies Program welcomes Dr. Jayme Canty, a professor of Humanities at Clark Atlanta University, whose research and writing explore how queerness is actualized in traditional matrilineal spaces. In this two-part colloquium, Canty will discuss her book, "Snapping Beans: Voices of a Black Queer Lesbian South," and lead an oral history workshop, guiding attendees through an interview featured in her publication.
A raffle for 15 signed copies of Snapping Beans will conclude the event, with five copies reserved for community members. Light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.
This event is part of the ongoing initiatives for the Placemaking Project. Placemaking: Expanding Black Queer and Feminist Perspectives in Africana Studies is a project funded by the CSU Advancing and Expanding Ethnic Studies grant from the Mellon Foundation. It aims to deepen engagement with Black perspectives on gender and sexuality by expanding course offerings and programming at Fresno State, strengthening recruitment and retention efforts in the Africana Studies Program, and fostering connections with the broader Black queer and feminist community in the Central Valley.
Event registration ends today, Monday, April 21.
