Fresno State is joining colleges and universities nationwide to celebrate Cybersecurity Awareness Month this October. Each week, we’ll spotlight one simple, high-impact step you can take to protect your accounts, coursework and our campus community.
Week 1 Focus: Build Stronger Passwords with Help from a Password Manager
Weak or reused passwords are one of the easiest ways attackers gain access. Long, unique passphrases stored in a password manager greatly reduce risk — and save you time.
What to Do This Week
- Create long, unique passphrases for every account. Aim for three to four random words with numbers or symbols (e.g., River-Orange-Bicycle!27). Never reuse passwords.
- Use a password manager to generate and securely store strong passwords. Choose a reputable manager, enable sync across your devices, and include your Fresno State and personal accounts.
- Turn on 2-Step Verification (Duo) for your Fresno State account. This adds a powerful second layer of protection if your password is ever exposed. Enroll or manage your settings here.
How to Spot and Report Phishing
- Be cautious with unexpected messages — especially those about job offers, gift cards, account issues or “urgent” requests.
- Don’t click links or open attachments you weren’t expecting.
- Verify suspicious messages by contacting the sender through a known, separate channel.
- Report suspected phishing to reportphishing@mail.fresnostate.edu.
