Recently I have been reflecting on the exceptional and visionary role that our campus has played in our region and world in producing visionary leaders.
In this tapestry of leadership, we find individuals who embody the invested virtues of leadership in various capacities, both formal and informal. Our alumni are exceptional leaders because they are shaped by experiences, care, and inspiring knowledge from our entire Fresno State community. Our recent university rankings are a testament to the exceptional leaders we have on this campus and to the tremendous work that each of you do every day.
A few weeks ago, we faced the heartbreaking loss of one of our leaders, Dr. Francine Oputa. For over three decades, Dr. Oputa served Fresno State with unwavering dedication, wearing multiple hats as a faculty member, staff and leader. Her legacy as an advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion will forever be etched in our university's history. Dr. Oputa's visionary leadership, integrity, and her ability to foster meaningful dialogue on challenging issues were nothing short of remarkable. She was not only a mentor but also a source of inspiration to many of us. I was touched to see many of you at the reception honoring her last Friday.
Dr. Oputa's passing reminds us of the profound impact that leaders can have on our campus community. Her legacy of bridge-building, dialogue, and fellowship is a testament to the enduring power of leadership to effect positive change.
As we reflect on the lessons we learned from Dr. Oputa, let us remember that at the heart of what we do at Fresno State is the mission to develop the next generation of leaders—our students. This mission underscores the importance of leadership in our everyday roles and responsibilities. I want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for the leadership you bring to Fresno State. Your dedication, commitment, and unwavering support make it possible for me to champion this exceptional university. Together, we will continue to nurture an environment where leadership flourishes and our students thrive.
With heartfelt appreciation,
Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval, Ph.D.
