Dr. Sam Iacobellis, an aviation industry leader and distinguished engineering alumnus, passed away in September. He was instrumental in developing the relationship between Boeing and the Lyles College of Engineering, which resulted in establishment of the Husband-Boeing Honors Scholars Program in Engineering.
Dr. Iacobellis headed the team that developed the B1-B bomber and is known fondly as the “Father of the B1-B bomber.” He earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Fresno State in 1952 and a master’s degree in engineering at UCLA in 1963.
He was named Top Dog outstanding alumnus in Engineering in 1982. Later, he received an honorary doctorate from the University.
