Dear community friends,
We are saddened to report the passing of the poet Peter Everwine, a professor emeritus of English at Fresno State. Peter died in Fresno on Sunday, Oct. 28. He was 88.
Mr. Everwine came to Fresno State in 1962 to teach poetry writing alongside Philip Levine, and later with C.G. Hanzlicek. Together, the trio formed the pillars of the University's Creative Writing Program in our English Department. He retired from Fresno State in 1991.
Mr. Everwine held fellowships from the NEA and Guggenheim Foundation, among other awards, and he served as a senior Fulbright lecturer in Israel. He published seven collections of poetry, including "Collecting the Animals," which in 1972 won the Lamont Poetry Prize. A new collection of poems was scheduled to be published soon.
Public services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10 at Farewell Funeral Services, 660 W. Locust Ave., #101, Fresno.
