Join Dr. David Zakarian, Haig and Isabel Berberian Endowed Chair of Armenian Studies at Fresno State, for a fascinating talk on the hidden world of manuscript curses in medieval Armenia.
Many Armenian manuscripts came with stern warnings — harm the book, and face a curse. These vivid inscriptions, written by scribes, sponsors and owners, served as protection against theft, damage or misuse. Far from being mere superstitions, they reveal how deeply manuscripts were valued as sacred, communal and cultural treasures.
Zakarian will explore how these curses transformed manuscripts into more than books — making them living witnesses of faith, anxiety, resilience and hope in medieval Armenian society.
This event is free and open to the public.
