Fresno State’s University Theatre presents “Godspell,” originally conceived and directed by John Michael Tebelak, with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, and directed by J. Daniel Herring.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 18 through 22 at the John W. Wright Theatre on campus. Tickets are $20 for adults; $18 for Fresno State faculty, staff, alumni and military; and $10 for all students. (This production contains mature content and themes. Children under five will not be admitted.)
In “Godspell,” a small group of performers help Jesus Christ share his parables through an energetic mix of games, storytelling and sharp comic timing — reimagined for today’s world. With music by Schwartz, the Tony Award-winning composer of “Wicked,” this fresh take on the beloved musical blends pop culture nods, vibrant choreography and a wide range of musical styles to bring new life to timeless messages. As the story journeys from joyful celebration to the emotional depth of the Last Supper and Crucifixion, Jesus’ teachings of kindness, tolerance and love shine with a bold, modern edge.
The production features performances from Audrey Allen, Catricia Alvarez, Andre Avila-Villanueva, Nico J. Diviccaro, Daphne Doss, Joey Giudici, Justice, Em Monson, Liv Monson, Sage Rivera, Isaiah Samaniego, Diego J. Sosa, Cesar J. Uribe and Grant Wilkins.
