On Nov. 3, several Fresno State faculty and staff completed the Gavin Gladding Memorial 5k walk/run put on by the Two Cities Marathon.
Since early August, these dedicated participants have been training as part of the "Couch to 5k" fitness class sponsored by Organizational Excellence.
As the name suggests, "Couch to 5k" is based on a gradually progressive workout plan that takes people from no running experience to 5k-ready in 12 weeks. Week one was a simple 15 minute workout, alternating between one minute of running and one-and-a -half minutes of walking.
Twelve weeks later, those who stuck with the class saw remarkable progress and everyone was able to run for a minimum of 20 minutes straight. In total, 19 faculty and staff have participated in at least one Couch to 5k class this fall. Nine of them signed up for the Two Cities 5k, while others chose not to sign up but still came to class weekly. Regardless of their goals, everyone improved in some way and had a blast along the way!
Couch to 5k is one of five fall activity classes that are offered weekly to faculty and staff, completely free of charge. If you are interested in joining, the class meets in front of the Henry Madden Library at 5:10 p.m. Tuesdays. Couch to 5k is a great way to get exercise while being supported by a group who shares your goals. Anyone can join at any time and no running experience is required. Whether you are just looking to build healthy habits, or you’re interested in training for a 5k yourself, come check it out!
