Dr. Sidney H. Chang, emeritus professor of history, passed away in his home in Fresno on Oct. 3 at the age of 82. Hired in 1966, he worked in the History Department until about 2000. After his retirement, he continued to teach as temporary faculty.
Dr. Chang was active in academic work until about two years ago, when Parkinson's disease adversely affected his mobility. Born in Wuchang, Hubei Province, China, Dr. Chang spent much of his childhood in Hunan Province. A visiting professor at Cheng-chi University in Taiwan in 1975 and 1976, he believed good education is the foundation of future success.
His generous donation established a fund for annual awards to history students for the best paper in Chinese studies.
