Name: Kenneth N. Hansen, Ph.D.
Title: Full professor of political science and American Indian studies
Length of service: 16 years
Academic Degrees:
- Ph.D. Political Science (Public Administration, International Relations, and History minor) from Texas Tech University
- M.A., B.A. Political Science from Cal State Fullerton
What is your most notable accomplishment in your field, and why was it important? My scholarly books on military base closings and on Indian reservation gaming politics. Publications and research are extremely important in political science and social sciences more generally. Good research informs our teaching.
What are you most passionate about in your field and why?
I love to study Native American politics, governance, law, culture and the like. I think traditional cultural solutions are extremely amenable to fixing the policy problems caused by modernism — especially with regard to the environment.
What is a memorable moment you had in class, and what does that reveal about your teaching style?
Any time we share a good laugh is worth remembering. It happens less frequently nowadays, given the times we live in. We shouldn't take ourselves too seriously. Learning should be challenging, but not stressful.
What do you like to do for fun in your spare time?
Camp, go to the beach, or go to Hawaii.
What is something interesting about you that most people don’t know?
I love to cook, especially wild game. And I grow two different kinds of sage in my yard.
Is there something else you would like to share that was not asked?
I taught at three other universities before I got to Fresno State. This is my last stop.
