Dean Dr. Michelle DenBeste and the College of Social Sciences are saddened to announce the passing of longtime staff member Fabiola “Fabby” Alvarez de Gasca.

Fabby was diagnosed with cancer at age 40 and fought the disease bravely for six years. Sadly, she passed away on Sunday, May 5.

“Fabby was a beloved member of the COSS family. She had a kind heart and a sharp mind. Everyone who met her remembers her smile and her warmth. She will be terribly missed. Our thoughts are with her family during this very difficult time,” DenBeste said.

Fabby was a U.S. Veteran and was a dedicated member of the University. She gave 20 years of exemplary service in different departments on campus and in different capacities.

She graduated from the Craig School of Business in the fall of 1997 and began working in the Chicano and Latin American Studies Department as a temporary employee in January 1998. Five months later, she accepted a permanent position.

Fabby began her career as a student assistant and later worked in the office of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies and in the Office of the Provost. In the College of Social Sciences, she served as an administrative support coordinator in the Development Office and the Chicano and Latin American Studies Department, and as assistant to the dean. She became an analyst in the dean’s office in July 2014.

There was nothing Fabby wouldn’t do for the University and her colleagues. She was a warm, friendly, and welcoming person to everyone in her presence with an infectious smile and a wonderful sense of humor.

In 2018, Fabby retired and spent the last year of her life with her children and family. She is survived by her husband, Antonio Gasca, and her sons Antonio, 15, and Ulises, 12.

Fabby will always remain a cherished and valued member of the University and the COSS family.

The Gasca Alvarez family will greet friends and loved ones from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday, May 13 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church (2838 N. West Ave.) with a Rosary at 7 p.m. A mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 14 at the church. Graveside services will follow at Fresno Memorial Gardens (175 S. Cornelia Ave).

Fresno State flags will be lowered to half-staff on Tuesday, May 14 in her honor.
