In June, Dr. Miguel Perez (Public Health) will be leading a group of 13 Fresno State students on a service-learning trip to the Dominican Republic to educate residents on clean water access, health promotion and disease prevention.
They plan to bring clean water to six bateys in the region, which are encampments where Haitian immigrants reside. Because of the lack of sanitary water in the region, residents are more susceptible to health epidemics, like cholera and typhoid.
Through the Dominican Republic Clean Water Initiative and the generous financial support of Fresno State's Friends for Civic Engagement, students and Dr. Perez are hoping to raising enough donations to bring water purifiers, chlorine tablets and food to residents in the area.
