The Southeast Asian 1975 Legacy Exhibition has officially launched. This meaningful and beautifully curated exhibit offers a space where families can come together to explore and reflect on Hmong and Lao identity, history and heritage.
Held in recognition of 50 years since the resettlement of Southeast Asian communities in the United States after the Secret War in Laos, the opening reception created a powerful environment for Hmong and Lao families, community members, and campus partners to learn, share stories, and engage in dialogue about the collective journey and legacy of Southeast Asian peoples.
“This was more than an exhibit—it was an experience. It reminded me that our stories belong in academic spaces too,” a Fresno State student said.
Some of the most moving moments during Hmong American Day 2025 included young children discovering pieces of Hmong history for the first time, and Hmong veterans emotionally connecting with the T-28 exhibit. Seeing both younger and older generations interact with their history in such a prominent academic setting left a lasting impact as well as a moment of pride, healing and empowerment.
“The exhibit helped me understand my parents’ and grandparents’ journey on a deeper level. I brought my younger siblings, and it sparked conversations we’ve never had before,” a freshman and student assistant in the Southeast Asian Student Success Center said.
On behalf of Southeast Asian Student Success, the Hmongstory Legacy team, and the Lao American Community of Fresno, we welcome everyone to visit the Southeast Asian 50 Years Legacy Exhibition, now open through Sept. 30. The exhibit is located on the second and third floors of the Library Ellipse Gallery at Fresno State. Summer hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.; the library is closed on weekends.
Contact Dr. Shimel Her Saychou (ssaychou@csufresno.edu) if you would like to schedule a guided tour by a member of the Hmongstory Legacy team.
