After a University-wide search, Dr. Alam Hasson has been named as the associate dean of the College of Science and Mathematics, effective June 1, 2018.
Dr. Christopher Meyer, dean of the College of Science and Mathematics, announced the appointment.
“I am thrilled to continue working with Dr. Hasson in his role as associate dean," Dr. Meyer said. "Dr. Hasson’s talent, dedication, work ethic, integrity, extensive experience, and demonstrated accomplishments as an administrator make him an ideal fit for the position."
Dr. Meyer added that Dr. Hasson is extremely conscientious and dedicated to student success.
"Dr. Hasson has an excellent grasp of both the details of the many diverse components of the job and the overarching 'big picture' goals of the college in the context of the university and community," he said.
Dr. Hasson has been serving as the interim associate dean in the college since August 2016. As a faculty member since 2001, Dr. Hasson possesses a wealth of knowledge about the college and university. An outstanding teacher and scholar, Dr. Hasson has also excelled as an administrator, beginning with his roles as Director of the Geosciences METRO Center (2009-13) and director of the Institute of Climate Change, Oceans and Atmosphere (ICOA, 2011-14) on campus. He also served as graduate coordinator (2010-14) and then chair of the Department of Chemistry (2014-16).
Dr. Hasson’s numerous and varied accomplishments include several successful research and administrative initiatives that have benefitted the college tremendously. He has been awarded 16 external grants supporting research and education totaling $4.5M featuring funding from four federal agencies: National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institute of Health (NIH), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). His grant highlights include a $1.4M NSF grant that established the Geoscience METRO Center to increase the number of under-represented students in the Geosciences.
He has been recognized with several awards, including the inaugural Provost’s Award for Promising New Faculty in 2006, and the Provost’s Award for Distinguished Achievement in Research, Scholarship or Creative Accomplishment in 2013. His successes as Chemistry Department Chair include the implementation of the new B.S. Biochemistry degree program and the substantial expansion of General Chemistry sections for student access to these critical gateway courses.
Dr. Hasson earned his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Birmingham (UK) and was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at UCLA. He has published over 30 peer reviewed journal articles, 15 of which include Fresno State student co-authors, and contributed over 140 conference presentations. He has served as a panel reviewer for the NSF and as an ad-hoc proposal reviewer for agencies including NSF and USDA.
