How long have you worked at Fresno State?
I have been a dedicated member of the community for several years, beginning my journey as an assistant professor and progressing to my current position as an associate professor in Italian Studies, housed in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures. This academic year, I am honored to serve as the resident director for CSU International Programs in Florence, Italy. In this capacity, I proudly represent our university and the Valley, working diligently to enhance international educational experiences and opportunities.
Are you a Valley native?
I am not originally from the Valley; however, I now call this place my proud home. My journey here was motivated by the opportunity to contribute to and be a part of the vibrant academic community here, particularly within the Italian Studies program. The unique cultural diversity of the Valley and the dynamic environment at Fresno State drew me to this region, and I am delighted to be a part of this community.
Are you part of a Bulldog family with generations of Bulldog graduates or current students?
Yes, I am proud to be part of a Bulldog family. My wife is an alumna, having completed her graduate education here. While we do not have multiple generations of Bulldogs in our family yet, we cherish our connection to this vibrant academic community through her experience as a graduate.
Do you have a campus mentor or someone who has helped you in your career?
I am fortunate to be part of a supportive community here, where colleagues and peers generously share their experiences and insights. This collaborative environment has significantly contributed to my professional growth and success.
Tell us about your department and what people may not know about it.
The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures is dedicated to comprehensive language education, fostering communication skills, cultural understanding, interdisciplinary connections, and community engagement. In this context, I have contributed to the Italian Studies program, enhancing the curriculum and creating immersive study abroad opportunities. These initiatives enable students to truly experience Italian culture, further supported by a lecture series that brings Italy's rich heritage to our community.
What is your most notable accomplishment in your field, and why was it important?
My notable accomplishment is creating and enriching the Italian Studies program here, where I established a new interdisciplinary minor, various new courses, and two brand-new study abroad programs in Italy. This initiative has not only broadened the academic horizons of our students but also significantly heightened the profile of Italian culture and language education within the Valley, building bridges between the university and our local community.
What are you most passionate about in your field and why?
I am passionate about connecting students with Italian culture, literature, and language, fostering an inclusive learning environment that celebrates diversity. My teaching is dedicated to promoting global awareness and engagement, employing innovative pedagogical approaches and crafting immersive experiences to enrich students’ academic and personal growth.
What is a memorable moment you had at your job?
A memorable moment at my job was when a former student reached out to share how the Italian Studies program had positively influenced their career path. Hearing firsthand the lasting impact of our program on students' lives reinforced the importance of our work and was a poignant reminder of our role in shaping futures.
What is a memorable moment you had in class?
A particularly memorable moment occurred in my Italian Food Culture class during a discussion about films that represent various cultures. The students were highly engaged, sharing personal insights and drawing connections between their cultural backgrounds and the Italian culture we were exploring. It was a rewarding experience to see the students relate their lives to the course material, creating a prosperous and inclusive learning environment.
What is your teaching style?
My teaching style is centered around inclusivity and the integration of diverse learning methods to cater to the unique needs of each student. I use a range of course delivery modes such as HyFlex, online, hybrid and flipped classes to ensure accessibility and flexibility. My approach combines communicative and content-based instruction, enhanced with innovative technologies, to create an adaptable and engaging learning environment.
What is your favorite quote or saying?
As a researcher specializing in Niccolò Machiavelli, this quote captures the essence of my teaching and scholarly endeavors: "Whoever wishes to foresee the future must consult the past, for human events ever resemble those of preceding times. This arises from the fact that they are produced by men who ever have been, and ever shall be, animated by the same passions, and thus they necessarily have the same results."
This perspective guides my approach to educating students about the Italian language and culture, emphasizing the significance of historical contexts and encouraging a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of our shared human experiences.
What is the most interesting or unusual job you've ever had?
My current position as the resident director for CSU International Programs in Florence, Italy, stands out as the most intriguing and unconventional role I have undertaken. Moving beyond my usual focus on teaching and research, this administrative role has expanded my professional experience, offering a broader view of international education across the entire CSU system.
It is both challenging and rewarding as I work to enhance global engagement opportunities for students from various CSU campuses. This unique position has enriched my career and deepened my commitment to international education.
What do you like to do for fun in your spare time?
In my spare time, I love exploring California's natural beauty, whether by visiting the beaches along the coast or hiking in the mountain ranges. The state's diverse landscapes provide a perfect backdrop for outdoor adventures and relaxation.
What is something interesting about you that most people don’t know?
I value transparency and believe in fostering genuine relationships. While I am open about most aspects of my life, not everyone knows of my passion for rowing. It is a sport I deeply enjoy, and I make the most of it at the San Luis Obispo Rowing Club whenever my schedule allows.
Is there something else you would like to share that was not asked?
I want to share my deep belief in the transformative power of education. I strive not just to teach the Italian language and culture but also to instill a sense of curiosity and global awareness in my students. By creating an inclusive and interactive learning space, we enable students to become global citizens who understand, value and contribute to the diverse cultures of our world.
