Did you know Fresno has one of the largest Hmong populations in the United States? Do you have Hmong friends, family, or colleagues? Have you attended a Hmong event and wanted to learn more about the culture?
The Asian and Pacific Islander Programs and Services team is excited to host a biweekly book club this semester. Our upcoming session will spotlight "The Bride Price" by Mai Neng Moua, an insightful exploration of Hmong-American traditions and the intricate cultural practice of the bride price.
Join us as we dive deep into the historical and contemporary significance of Hmong marriages and the bride price tradition, uncovering its impact on Hmong-American communities and its role in cultural preservation and evolution. Whether you're passionate about cultural studies or simply curious about Hmong customs, this event is designed to educate, inspire, and spark meaningful conversations. Everyone is welcomed.
- Each in-person session will have a guided discussion of the assigned chapters and a presentation providing additional insights into the Hmong culture to enrich your understanding and prepare you for the next reading. We will also include everyone into the “Chapter Chatter” group chat where you can share your thoughts and questions while reading.
- Books will be provided for all participants. To register, please complete this form and be sure to select the event titled “The Bride Price: A Hmong American Look into Tradition.” We will follow up with you soon to provide more details.
We hope that with your participation, we can create a vibrant space for learning, discussion, and connection. Do not miss this opportunity to delve into fascinating cultural practices and contribute to our community’s shared understanding.
