I am not a Valley native. I came here after achieving my doctorate for the position in the Africana Studies on campus, my first full time teaching position.
Tell us about your department and what people may not know about it.
Africana Studies is a multidisciplinary field that connects students to a wide variety of fields offered on campus, but offers the Black tradition in each field that many departments ignore.
What is your most notable accomplishment in your field, and why was it important?
The completion of my second book, Solutions For Anti-Black Misandry, Flat Blackness, and Black Male Death: The Black Masculinist Turn (2023). It is the culmination of 13 years of research and study.
What are you most passionate about in your field and why?
I am most passionate about my work on Black males and how much more I understand now than I ever have. It excites me to hear from Black males of all ages who are engaging my work and learning from it.
What is a memorable moment you had at your job?
When I originally developed The ONYX Black Male Collective while teaching the Black Male Experience course, and getting to see Black male students excited to learn more about themselves.
What is a memorable moment you had in class?
Watching my students prepare for a conference using what they’ve learned from class to give a conference presentation.
What is your teaching style?
I try to use an interactive teaching style that incorporates required discussion and responses to media (such as video, imagery, articles and even social media).
What is the most interesting or unusual job you've ever had?
Teaching a class where 14-17 year-old young men of color in Philadelphia were court-ordered to earn their GEDs.
What do you like to do for fun in your spare time?
I created a podcast on YouTube called The ONYX Report which has recently garnered 5 million views.
What is something interesting about you that most people don’t know?
I have been teaching at the college level for 25 years and I cook the Thanksgiving meal for my whole family annually.
