If you saw Arnel Ordonio working at Circulation Services in the Henry Madden Library, you might not realize that he's truly a Renaissance man. But Ordonio does it all, from woodworking and interior design to building skateboards.
Ordonio has worked for two years in the Madden Library as a library services specialist and head of Tech Lending. Previously, he worked 10 years for the Salinas Public Library.
Tech Lending has reportedly grown incredibly under his watch.
"One of the great things about the library is open access," he said. "Having the Tech Lending department in the library allows students, from all majors, access to equipment they would not be able to obtain from their own college. We promote student success for all students."
Ordonio loves working with his diverse group of student assistants.
"I'm just happy to be a small part of it," he said.
Besides providing laptops for students to borrow, Tech Lending also has high-quality cameras. Students can use the equipment for schoolwork and/or personal use, such as creating YouTube vlogs, taking wedding photos, and even photographing baby showers.
"Students are not just borrowing equipment, but are given the opportunity to learn how to use equipment they would normally not have access to," he said. "The biggest challenge we face is the high demand. Our students love what we are offering, but supply is limited."
Technology attracted Ordonio to the library community, but he has also successfully operated two businesses.
"I created a skateboard manufacturing company called Kuya Longboards," he said. "In my garage, I handcraft skateboards, which are now in over 20 countries."
Ordonio also opened two vape retail stores in Monterey to help people quit their tobacco habits.
"I was a smoker for 10 years and vaping helped me quit," he said. "I have helped people — from doctors, police officers, teachers, etcetera — to quit smoking cigarettes."
Ordonio recently sold the stores to spend more time with his family.
This Renaissance man never quits. He also manufactures furniture. Woodworking and interior design are his passions.
"I love creating things," he said. "Creativity gives me the freedom to express myself. It also gives me an excuse to skip changing a diaper or two."
Ordonio is happily married and has two children: Alina (age 4) and Logan (age 2).
