Interim Provost Dr. Xuanning Fu announces the appointment of Dr. James Marshall and Dr. Alam Hasson as assistants to the provost while continuing to serve in their current roles on campus.
Marshall, dean of the Division of Research and Graduate Studies the past six years, will oversee campus accreditation and community engagement. He was previously a professor and associate dean in the Kremen School of Education and Human Development. During his 31 years on campus, Marshall has held several leadership roles, including graduate program coordinator, department chair and director of the Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership.
As an active scholar, he served as principal investigator on over $9 million in grants, published 34 articles and has made numerous presentations to state, national and international audiences. Marshall received the President’s Award for Excellence in 2006. He earned a bachelor’s degree in resource conservation and wildlife ecology from the University of Florida, and a master’s in biology and science education and a Ph.D. in science education from the University of South Florida.
Hasson, associate dean in the College of Science and Mathematics since 2016, will oversee the Academic Affairs budget and serve as the senior academic technology officer. He joined the chemistry department faculty in 2001 after working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles. Hasson has taught a variety of classes from introductory courses to graduate level seminars and worked with students on research projects. He has also served as thesis committee chair, chemistry graduate coordinator, department chair and director of the Institute of Climate Change, Oceans and Atmosphere.
Hasson has led and participated on teams that were awarded research grants totaling more than $22 million. He has published over 30 journal articles and conducted more than 150 conference presentations, which include Fresno State students as co-authors. He was recognized with the Provost’s Award for Distinguished Achievement in Research, Scholarship or Creative Accomplishment in 2013. Hasson earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Oxford and his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Birmingham.
