During the holidays, phishing activity spikes, with scammers targeting charity, delivery, gift card and online shopping services. If you receive an email requesting sensitive information — such as login credentials, Social Security numbers, birth dates, or credit card details — DO NOT CLICK ON ANY LINKS.
Phishing involves attackers posing as trusted institutions or individuals through email or malicious websites to steal personal information. These messages often create a sense of urgency and appear convincingly legitimate. Staying vigilant and taking simple precautions can significantly reduce your risk of falling victim to these attacks.
How to Spot and Avoid Phishing
- Be cautious of unsolicited calls, visits, or emails requesting employee or internal information. If someone claims to represent a legitimate organization, verify their identity directly with the company.
- Never provide personal or financial details by email or respond to unsolicited requests. Share personal or university information only when you’re sure the requester is authorized.
- Before sending sensitive data online, confirm a website’s security by looking for “https” in the URL and a closed padlock icon indicating encrypted communication.
- Verify the legitimacy of an email request by contacting the company using trusted contact information, rather than details from the email or its links.
- Keep your devices protected by installing and maintaining antivirus software, firewalls and email filters. Enable any anti-phishing features available in your email client and web browser.
- Use 2-Step Verification for stronger security. It protects your accounts by requiring both your password and a second factor, such as a phone, tablet or computer.
