Name: Betsy A. Hays, APR, Fellow PRSA
Title: Professor and chair
Department: Media, Communications and Journalism
Academic Degrees: B.A. in journalism with an emphasis in public relations, M.A. in mass communication
How long have you worked at Fresno State: Since fall 1999
What is your most notable accomplishment in your field, and why was it important? Being inducted into the College of Fellows in 2013 by the Public Relations Society of America and serving as the president of the North Pacific District of PRSA in 2015. I am very proud of these recognitions from my peers at the top of their game in the public relations industry.
What are you most passionate about in your field and why? I love the advocacy side of public relations, and how PR can make the world a better place when used well and ethically.
What is a memorable moment you had at your job? This job is an incredible blessing, and I have many memorable moments each semester with my students — everything from silly things where we all enjoy a belly laugh together, to poignant ones where we share an "aha" moment. I love to see them grow and flourish, and it is heartwarming to see how good they are to each other, providing support and encouragement all along the way. And once they graduate and go out into the world, I enjoy hearing about their adventures and successes. I'm so grateful that social media has made it so easy to stay in touch. Something else memorable was when one of my students from my very first semester teaching (fall 1999) came back to finish his degree 15+ years later. It was a joy for us both!
What is a memorable moment you had in class, and what does that reveal about your teaching style? Each spring my capstone class conducts a public relations/advertising campaign for a community benefit organization. One spring it was an extra special experience as the CBO partner I chose was the Marjaree Mason Center. One of the students in the class had been a client of theirs previously and had expressed interest in giving back as they had been so good to her. She shared her story with the class, they rallied around her and did some of the best work I've ever seen.
What do you like to do for fun in your spare time? I love cooking, baking, reading and yoga!
What is something interesting about you that most people don’t know? I have co-authored three books: "Win & Wow: Public Relations Secrets for Everyday Success," "Land Your Dream Career in College: The Complete Guide to Success," and "Life After College: 10 Steps to Build A Life You Love."
Is there something else you would like to share that was not asked?Go Dogs! This is a magical place where lives are transformed and I am so happy to be a part of it!
