The campus community is invited to a free presentation that will discuss the challenges with history, memory and gendered politics tied to the sexual violence allegations against Cesar Chavez.
Chavez was a Mexican farm labor activist in California who emerged nationally as a union leader in the 1960s and 70s. His status as a Hispanic civil rights leader has continued to grow since his death in 1993, as streets, schools, centers and statues bearing his name and likeness have been erected across the country.
However, his legacy has shifted recently as reports of his sexual abuse of numerous girls and women have surfaced in the media.
The event will be hosted by College of Social Sciences faculty Dr. Alina Méndez, Dr. Larissa Mercado-López and Dr. Cierra Raine Sorin and moderated by Dr. Sophia Boutilier.
The College of Social Sciences Teach-In series brings faculty experts into timely conversations about social and political events so students and the campus community can learn, ask questions and become better informed.
Date: Monday, April 6
Time: 10 - 11:30 a.m.
Location: Library, Room 2206
