Two Fresno State educators are among the 35 higher education professionals selected by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) for its 2021 Emerging Leaders Program.
Zenaida Cruz, clinical coordinator of Counseling and Psychological Services, and Dr. Varaxy Yi Borromeo, assistant professor and coordinator of the Higher Education Administration and Leadership program, were named.
AASCU created the leadership development program in 2015 to prepare early- to mid-career academic and administrative staff to advance to administrative roles with greater responsibility and oversight.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 program will be held virtually. It will feature one faculty-led webinar per month from April–November 2021 and include smaller group sessions for reflection, networking and case studies.
Participants will develop an on-campus project or initiative to strengthen their leadership skills and positively impact their institutions and communities. Cohort members will work with a leader on their campus to develop and execute their project.
Dr. Sudarshan Kapoor, professor emeritus of social work and peace studies, was a speaker at the NRI Hindu and Sikh Scholars tribute to Sri Guru Tegh Bahadurji on his 400th Prakash Purab.
Dr. Nupur Hajela, assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, presented “Telehealth Implementation In Different Neurological Physiotherapy Settings within the U.S. during COVID-19 - Key Learnings in Academia and Clinical Practice” at the World Physiotherapy Congress, held April 9-11. The work was in collaboration with Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions.
Anessa Kennett is the new director for the San Joaquin Valley Public Health Consortium, a program within the Central California Center for Health and Human Services (under the College of Health and Human Services). The Consortium allows public health directors and health officers an opportunity for collaboration and strategic planning to address public health issues faced by the counties and regions.
In July, Donna Lutz will become assistant director of the Social Welfare, Evaluation, Research and Training Center, proceeding longtime assistant director, Barbara Foster, who will soon enjoy retirement.
Dr. Susan Mirlohi, assistant professor in the Department of Public Health, presented her pedagogical research, “Teaching Solid Waste Management to Environmental Public Health Students through Personal Waste Audit, Energy Saving, and Self-reflection Analysis,” at the 36th International Conference on Solid Waste Technology and Management in March. She also presented "Preparing the Next Generation of Environmental Health Workforce through Faculty Internship Programs: Existing Challenges and Opportunities for Improvement" at the 42nd Annual Central California Research Symposium April 14.
Dr. Caio Sarmento, assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, received the ADInstruments Innovation Scholarship for 2021, which will allow him to attend the Virtual Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology later this week.
Dr. Jenna Sawdon-Bea, chair and associate professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, had the article she co-authored, "Ankle Stability and Movement Coordination Impairments: Lateral Ligament Sprains Revision" published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy. She also had two posters accepted at the World Physiotherapy Congress, held April 9-11.
The Social Welfare, Evaluation, Research and Training Center, housed within the College of Health and Human Services, received two three-year grants from the California Department of Social Services totalling over $21 million, including $10.3 million for the Bay Area Training Academy (which provides services to 12 Bay Area counties) and $11.2 million for the Central California Training Academy, (which provides services to nine Central California counties and three Central California coastal counties).
