College students were a major driving force behind the original Earth Day in 1970 and they continue to stand at the forefront of environmental movements to this day. We can see how this is evident here at Fresno State where students play a major role in planning and executing impactful Earth Day events and experiences for the campus and surrounding community.
The Sustainability Club at Fresno State will be hosting their annual Earth Day event on Wednesday, April 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Memorial Gardens (the lawn in front of the Kennel Bookstore). There will be many activities to enjoy, including:
- Plant Hub – California Climate Action Corps Fellows will teach attendees how to take cuttings from a larger plant, grown in one of the campus greenhouses, and place that cutting into a compostable pot to take home. You'll learn to repot the plant, care for it, and understand its water and light needs.
- Screen Printing – Bring your own t-shirt, sweatshirt, or reusable cloth bag, and we'll apply the Earth Day 2024 logo onto it in either white or black ink, based on your preference.
- Love Letters to the Earth – Write or paint a love letter to the earth to express your gratitude for the environment and all the ways it sustains life as we know it. Sit down, relax and reduce stress by flexing your creative muscles and demonstrating gratitude in the beautiful outdoor setting of campus. Attendees can take the love letter home or let us keep it.
- Clothing Repair Station – Have torn clothes but don’t want to throw them out? Bring your torn clothing to our event and a service learning student will sew the clothes to your preference! The apparel industry, more specifically the fast fashion industry, creates 92 million tons of textile waste each year. Give your clothes another chance; if they can't be salvaged, we'll recycle the material into bags for event attendees.
- Pop-up Thrift Store – Does your office have tons of extra scratch paper? Do you have some household items or clothes to get rid of? Reduce the number of things that go to landfills by donating any items you no longer need to our pop-up thrift store! Inspired by the thought that one’s trash is another’s treasure, all donated items will be made available for any attendee to claim for free. Items will be on a first come first served basis – holds for items will not be accepted. Any leftover items will be donated to a local thrift store after the event.
- Art Displays – Admire a collection of environmentally inspired art and consider what the artists are trying to convey with their craft. There are a few themes, among them is a campaign that calls for people to “Defund Climate Chaos,” which aims to bring awareness to the magnitude of money that goes towards fossil fuel industries.
- The Water Challenge – Do you think you can taste the difference between tap and bottled water? Despite the difficulty many people have in discerning the difference, bottled water remains widely sold across the globe, contributing to the issue of (micro)plastics. Try out our blind taste test and see if you can tell the difference!
- Student Clubs and Local Organizations – A variety of environmentally conscious student clubs and local organizations will share information about their organizations, advertising potential ways to get involved in their work. Some local organizations confirmed to attend are High Speed Rail Authority, Citizens Climate Lobby, San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District, Charge Across Town, City of Fresno, US Green Building Council - Central California, Caglia Environmental, NORESCO, International Green Industry Hall of Fame, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and Strategic Energy Innovations. Campus organizations include the Career Development Center’s Clothing Closet, Student Cupboard and the Central Valley College Corps. Student clubs include Fresno State NAACP, SunDogs, Tri-Beta, Geology Club and Sustainability Club.
- Photo Booths – Recreation Administration service learning students are providing environmentally themed photo backdrops for attendees to take photos that will last a lifetime. If you drop by our photo booths between 12 - 1 p.m., you can take your photo with our very own live mascot, Victor E. Bulldog IV.
