Dr. Anil Shrestha, Plant Science Department professor, was invited to make a presentation at the Weed Science Congress organized by the Weed Science Society of Bangladesh and hosted by the University of Technology Sarawak in Malaysia.
His lead paper presentation on April 11 was entitled, “Smart weed management: can we outsmart nature?" and given to an audience of approximately 300 conference attendees.
Shrestha also serves as the chief editor of the journal, "Fundamental and Applied Agriculture," published by the Farm to Fork Foundation in Bangladesh.
Dr. Amber Crowell, Sociology Department professor, testified to the California State Assembly Committee on Human Services on April 14 as a primary witness in support of state bill AB-2585, which would help fund guaranteed income programs in rural and understudied communities.
Crowell worked with students and faculty to oversee a related study for the Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission last year on the impact of monthly $500 stipends on the lives of low-income families in Southwest Fresno and Huron.
Less than five guaranteed income studies across the United States have focused on rural communities, including the Fresno study that Crowell authored, while the last round of state-funded guaranteed income pilots in California did not include any Central Valley communities. This bill would ensure that more research on guaranteed income is done on rural communities with Central Valley representation.
