Dr. Larissa M. Mercado-López, chair, Department of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies, received an award in the Innovate category from The California Alliance for Student Parent Success for her work in identifying innovative solutions and helping create an infrastructure to support student parents at Fresno State.
Mercado-López received the award at the California Student Parent Summit held Sept. 9 and 10 in San Luis Obispo.
Dr. Sudarshan Kapoor, professor emeritus of Social Work Education and Peace and Conflict Studies, was honored with a proclamation from the City of Fresno declaring September 25, 2025, as Dr. Sudarshan Kapoor Day, in recognition of his lifelong dedication to peace, nonviolence, and community service.

Faculty in the College of Health and Human Services are contributing authors in the Research Handbook on Health Education, Health Promotion and Diversity. The handbook discusses social determinants of health and propose key strategies for researchers to work with diverse groups. Contributing authors discuss the ethical concerns of research and evaluate the incorporation of cultural and linguistic competencies into various methodologies.
Authors include College of Health and Human Services deans, Drs. Miguel Perez (interim associate dean) and Kara Zografos (dean); in addition to public health faculty, Drs. Tanisha Garcia, Mary Garza and Manal Samaha. Perez also served as an editor for the publication.
University High School ranked the seventh best high school in California, 63rd in the nation, 16th best charter school in America, and the No. 1 best high school in the Fresno metro area in the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings.
The U.S. News rankings include data on nearly 25,000 public high schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia. Schools are scored on six factors based on their performance on state assessments and how well they prepare students for college.
UHS is one of only six high schools on a CSU or UC campus in California. As a part of their high school graduation requirements, University High students take Fresno State courses and earn 21 to 30 college credits upon graduation. These credits fulfill 10 out of the 17 general education requirements for the California State University system.
