A new hire as assistant athletic director of Student-Athlete Services in January of this year, Megan O'Quin helps students navigate college while competing as athletes.
"One thing that I love about my job is that every day is completely different," she said. "You never know what problems — good and bad — you’ll have to solve."
She holds a B.S. in Liberal Studies and master's degree in adult education, and she actually started out in sports marketing because she wanted to work with promotions and in game atmosphere.
But she didn't discover her dream career until her final semester earning her bachelor's degree, after she met with a professor who used to be in the field.
"He saw how I interacted to members of the football team, how I helped explained things and guided them," she said. "He thought that I would be amazing."
That was it. She was sold. Her career was launched.
She worked in her field at Northern Illinois University for 3 ½ years. Prior to that, she worked at Oregon State University for 10 years, where she earned her bachelor of science and her master of arts.
As a Fresno State employee, her bottom line is to make sure each student-athlete graduates from college. Central to that is making sure her students' welfare is being taken care of.
"We track eligibility to make sure they hit certain NCAA bench marks," she said. "We assist them academically with tutors/study hours/academic meetings, offer Life Skills programs to help them grow as a person, help arrange community service so our student-athletes give back to the community, and everything in between!"
Hers is the kind of career that comes with rewards that go beyond monetary compensation. The big payoff is watching many student-athletes who never thought they would get a college degree graduate.
Megan is a member of the N4A (National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics) and is working on many projects to help Fresno State student-athletes in the future.
But she also enjoys her family time.
As intrepid adventurers, she and her husband, Jason (who also works at Fresno State as the director of events for Athletics), both have the urge to travel.
"Whenever we are in a new location, we love to explore and experience new things," she said. "Unfortunately we have been so busy since arrive here we haven’t had a chance to do that yet, and with Yosemite National Park right there it is driving me crazy. We can’t wait to start driving and exploring around here."
When not out exploring and attending Fresno State Athletic events, they hang out at home with their Dalmatian, Tre, who is described as very spoiled and loved dog who thinks he is in charge.
