As we come together to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, I am honored to join you in recognizing and commemorating the remarkable contributions of Hispanic and Latine communities to our society. This year’s theme, “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together,” resonates deeply with our shared mission at Fresno State — to build a campus that is welcoming, inclusive, respectful, and free from discrimination, intolerance and harassment. It is a theme that not only reflects the historical and ongoing impact of Hispanic pioneers but also aligns with our collective responsibility to shape a future where all members of our community can thrive.
Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich cultural heritage, resilience and achievements of Hispanic and Latine individuals who have been at the forefront of social, economic and political change. These pioneers have paved the way for future generations, breaking barriers and challenging norms to create a more just and equitable society. Their legacy is one of courage, innovation and a steadfast commitment to progress — values that are mirrored in Fresno State’s core principles of exploration, excellence, inclusion and community.
As your inaugural University Diversity Officer, my vision is to lead our institution in fostering an environment where diversity is not just recognized but celebrated as a source of strength. In alignment with this year’s theme, I am committed to working collaboratively with all members of our campus community to shape a future that is inclusive and equitable for all. Together, we will continue to champion initiatives that promote cultural understanding, dismantle systemic barriers, and empower every individual to reach their full potential.
I encourage each of you to participate in the many events and activities across campus and through the Cross Culture and Gender Center [CCGC], which are planned for Hispanic Heritage Month. These events offer opportunities to learn, engage, and reflect on the significant contributions of Hispanic and Latine communities. More importantly, they provide a platform for us to come together as a community, to listen, to share and to inspire one another as we work towards a shared vision of equity and inclusion.
I look forward to celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with you all and to advancing our mission of advancing equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging at Fresno State.
