California Water Institute research student employee Phoebe Bloomfield is conducting a specialized project that will aid Fresno State in reducing groundwater overdraft creating more water sustainability on campus.
Phase one of the project is collecting an inventory of all the basins, wells, and irrigation systems Fresno State owns and operates. Working with CWI Assistant Director Cordie Qualle, Bloomfield is creating a digitized version of this inventory using AutoCAD Civil 3D, a program that allows for map overlaying and layer creation. Bloomfield is using maps of Fresno State that show blueprints of the basins, wells, facilities and irrigation ducts to create a single file containing multiple 3D layers. These layers can be manipulated by users to see information regarding Fresno State water systems, where they exist and how they are used.
The California Water Institute is planning to use the digitized inventory to assist in applying for grants to fund construction and implementation of water irrigation systems, water collection and water uses to support water sustainability on campus.
