Dr. Robert “Bob” Merrill

Bob Merrill, emeritus professor of geology, passed away in May. During his 35 years at Fresno State, he prepared many students for careers in geology and related fields. Dr. Merrill was an activist in protecting the public interest in water, land and energy use.

Dr. Barbara Varley

A memorial for Dr. Barbara Varley was held Aug. 26 at the Smittcamp Alumni House. Dr. Varley, a professor emeritus in the Department of Social Work Education, died earlier this year. The commemoration honored Dr. Varley’s work and commitment to the profession. She was the former associate dean of the School of Social Work at Fresno State, prior to its emergence as a department within the College of Health and Human Services.
