Did you know? Every 18 months in the U.S., the average cell phone user exchanges their mobile device, which leads to nearly 135 million cell phones discarded each year. In an effort to reduce e-waste, the Department of Public Health is partnering with the Fresno State Student Public Health Association and Omega Delta Sigma, a national veterans fraternity, on “Operation Cell Phone Drop” to collect recycled cell phones and tablets in support of the Wounded Warrior Project.
Now through Oct. 15, individuals can drop off their used cell phones and tablets to three locations on campus: the Department of Public Health (McLane Hall, Room 184), Lab School (Room 9) and the Veterans Services Office (McLane Hall Annex, Room 20-24).
“It is estimated that the average American has two old cell phones in a drawer at home,” said Dr. Miguel Perez, professor in the Department of Public Health. “Through Operation Cell Phone Drop, we hope to reduce the amount of e-waste, while providing much-needed resources to those who’ve served our country in the armed forces.”
All makes and models of cell phones are accepted, and in working condition or not. Donors are encouraged to erase all personal data from phones and tablets. However, as an extra layer of security, each donated phone will be cleared of personal data by Second Wave Recycling prior to distribution.
