Over the past several days, we have watched, with deep sorrow, the recent violence in Israel and Gaza.
Fresno State condemns the violence perpetrated by Hamas that willfully killed and targeted civilians.
I am devastated by the tragic loss of innocent lives and heartbroken to see so many suffer in the midst of an ongoing conflict that continues to inflict civilian casualties and despair in both Israel and Gaza.
Fresno State stands as a beacon of hope and a forum for dialogue, by being intentional about educating future leaders and envisioning a better way of being human. In the words of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr:
"Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."
Locally, we have seen antisemitic violence directed at businesses and Temple Beth Israel. Unequivocally, Fresno State stands against and condemns all acts of hate or hate speech; we stand firmly in solidarity with our esteemed Jewish friends, family, and neighbors; they are an integral part of our community.
My hope is that in the coming days and weeks we can have meaningful conversations and support each other by listening and leading with empathy.
If you are in need of mental health services at this time, know that they are available. Services for students are available in the Student Health and Counseling Center and employees are welcome to seek support through the Employee Assistance Program.
