The spotlight for this week is how to avoid phishing — a key to safeguarding your online presence.
Understand Phishing
Phishing is a deceptive tactic used by criminals to trick individuals into clicking on harmful links, opening malicious emails, or downloading unsafe attachments. This technique often involves sending messages referred to as bait via email, text, social media direct message or phone call. These communications appear legitimate, mimicking trusted entities to elicit a response.
Be proactive and protect yourself using the following reminders:
Identify Phishing Emails - To safeguard against phishing, look for these prevalent signs:
- Urgency - a subject line or message urging swift, immediate action.
- Information Requests - requests for personal or financial details.
- Dubious URLs - shortened or otherwise untrusted web links.
- Unexpected Communication - unsolicited requests or messages.
- Fraudulent Links or Addresses - amazan.com instead of amazon.com.
Incorrect grammar was once a red flag, but advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have allowed for grammatically flawless messages. Always be mindful of other indicators.
Resist Impulsive Actions - Avoid hastily clicking on links or attachments, especially if a message seems too good or overly alarming. If a message seems suspicious, do not act immediately and proceed to report it.
Report Suspicious Activity - If a message feels like a phishing attempt, forward it to the university’s designated reporting address: reportphishing@mail.fresnostate.edu.
Delete and Ignore - Delete the message without responding, clicking links, or downloading attachments, even if they seem safe or contain unsubscribe options.
Keeping Secure - Maintaining digital security is of the highest importance. By identifying potential threats, resisting impulsive decisions, reporting suspicious messages, and promptly deleting phishing attempts, you safeguard information and contribute to a safer online environment.
