Fresno State is joining colleges and universities nationwide to celebrate Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October. This week, we’re focusing on updates and patches — the easiest win to reduce risk.
Campus‑Managed vs. Personal Devices — Who updates what?
To reduce confusion and keep everyone safe, here’s how updates work at Fresno State:
Campus‑Managed Devices (university‑owned, centrally managed)
Technology Services patches and updates these devices automatically on a scheduled basis.
- What you should do: keep the device powered on and connected regularly; when prompted, restart immediately so updates can complete.
- Do not change update settings, install third‑party “updater” tools, or delay required restarts for long.
- If something seems off (e.g., repeated failures or unusual prompts), contact your Technology Services Liaison: technology.fresnostate.edu/departments/client-services.html
Personal Devices (home computers, phones, tablets, wearables, etc.)
You are responsible for updating personal devices. Use the checklists below.
- Personal Devices: Update basics
- Enable automatic updates for operating systems (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android) and apps.
- Restart devices regularly so updates can complete.
- Keep browsers and extensions current (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari); Update productivity/collaboration tools (Office, Adobe Reader, etc.).
- Don’t forget other devices: tablets, Chromebooks, smart TVs/streamers and wearables.
- Use built‑in updaters and official app stores. Ignore pop‑ups or ads telling you to “update now.”
- Back up important files before major OS upgrades.
