National Hispanic Heritage Month started as a celebration of the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries in 1921: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
The annual recognition period started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to be a monthlong observation from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
