Name: Travis W. Cronin
Title: Assistant professor
Department: Social work education
Academic Degrees: B.S. in sociology, master of social work, Ph.D. in social work
How long have you worked at Fresno State: I started in fall 2017.
What is your most notable accomplishment in your field, and why was it important? Being hired as an assistant professor at Fresno State was probably the most exciting moment of my professional career. I think my most notable accomplishment in social work would be the relationships I have formed during my time here, and the work I have done in collaboration with our campus community.
What are you most passionate about in your field and why? I am most passionate about the subject of the role of white supremacy in the development and maintenance of structural oppression. As a white man I benefit from intersectional privilege, and I think this creates a unique opportunity for me to challenge racial bigotry and bias. Focusing in this area has led to many uncomfortable conversations and improved relationships with many people similarly invested in condemning white supremacy. I am particularly interested in the ways white supremacy created biopsychosocial disparities for African American communities.
What is a memorable moment you had in class, and what does that reveal about your teaching style? My most memorable moment during class was when one of my classes surprised me on the last day of class with a piñata and quesadillas. This relates to my teaching style because I deeply desire the creation of a learning community where my students bring their full selves to the education process. Having students host a celebration on the last day of class indicated to me that we had developed a community where fun and learning could converge.
What do you like to do for fun in your spare time? I have been married for 18 years and we have four wonderful children together. I enjoy reading to my children, going on walks with my wife and eating meals together.
What is something interesting about you that most people don’t know? Most people don't know that I enjoy dancing. I have no formal training, yet I really enjoy getting lost in dancing to music that speaks to me.
Is there something else you would like to share that was not asked? When I came for my interview I asked several faculty what they liked best about working at Fresno State. The faculty kept saying, "We have great students here!" I was not sure what they meant by this at the time, but four years later I would give the same answer. The students I have had the privilege to work with during my time here have been phenomenal. I am so excited by the contributions our students are making to our campus, our local communities and to the world. I just feel lucky to be part of their process.
