Academic publishing exists at the intersection of three professions that are overwhelmingly white–academia, publishing and librarianship. Gatekeeping practices, from peer review to library collection development, have marginalized contributions by and about communities of color. This talk will examine how academic publishing has excluded voices of color from the scholarly record and explore the responsibility scholars and librarians have in centering the voices and stories of communities of color.

Harrison W. Inefuku is the Scholarly Publishing Services Librarian at the University Library at Iowa State University. He manages the Iowa State University Digital Press, Iowa State’s library publishing program. Prior to launching the press, Harrison launched and managed the Iowa State University Digital Repository. Harrison has published and presented on institutional repositories, diversity and inclusion in libraries and archives, and systemic racism in academic publishing.
