In a new semi-regular series in Campus News, the Fresno State Library will provide the campus community with updates about new initiatives, services and other things to be aware of.
In the Stacks: Terry Lewis “scores” big for grad student and the library
I was contacted by graduate voice student Gena Chambers, who was looking to perform a specific piece ("O, wonder!: Song Cycle for Mezzo-Soprano and Orchestra") by an Australian composer, Becky Llewellyn.
I managed to track the composer down online and began a conversation. She was excited to have the piece performed here, and because my sister lives in Australia, she mailed a copy to her (along with another score and a CD recording of the piece), and my sister then mailed the copy to me.
Since I have cataloged them, we now own the only physical copies in North America. She has since arranged the piece for new instrumentation at the request of the grad student and is in the process of mailing me the new arrangement and parts, so we will be the first library in the world to own these.
The performance next year will be the world premiere of the new orchestration. I'm proud to say that Music & Media had a part in this.
