The Richter Center is accepting nominations for the 2018 John D. Welty Award for Excellence in Community Service. The deadline for nominations is Nov. 20, 2018.
Each year, the award provides a $2,500 scholarship to one student who exemplifies the commitment to service that John Welty championed during his 22 years as president of Fresno State.
In reviewing nominations and selecting a winner, committee members will use the following criteria:

Applicants must be a junior, senior, or graduate student, currently enrolled, and in good academic standing with the University.

Candidates should demonstrate a regular commitment to service throughout their college career. Service efforts should show some consistency with respect to any or all of the following: type of service (i.e. tutoring, the environment, poverty alleviation, etc.); agency where service was provided, outcome of service (i.e. benefiting unemployed persons, or leading others to service), career focus of service (i.e. social work, business, education, etc.) (2x weighted factor).

The service provided must meet significant need(s) in the community that goes above and beyond any standard internship, scholarship or degree requirements. (2x weighted factor).

In order to qualify for the $2,500 scholarship that accompanies this award, the winner must have completed a minimum of 150 hours of accredited service over the previous 12 months (approximately August 2016 to August 2017). Accredited service may include credit for the service from a service-learning course, Community Service 1 or 101, internship or any other relevant, credit-bearing coursework.
- Service to the Fresno State campus community will not be considered for this award.
Nominations may come from any person, including self-nominations. Nominations must clearly and concisely address the nomination criteria and questions. A selection committee will review nominations and determine the award winner.
