A debate tournament is a venue where students from other universities dread hearing the phrase, "You are going against Fresno State!" from their coaches.
That is because Fresno State debaters are knowledgeable, smart, and prepared to take on any team in a debate round. Our debaters are bold and they have made Fresno State a formidable challenge in debate.
This month, the Fresno State Barking Bulldogs Debate Team attended the Robert Barbera Debate Tournament at CSU, Northridge. Led by Tom Boroujeni (Department of Communication), the team finished with another success.
Primavera Leal Martinez and Hunter Sansom won five out of six preliminary rounds and advanced to the elimination rounds in the varsity division of the tournament. Martinez and Sansom lost the semifinal debate to Arizona State and placed third in the tournament. Additionally, Martinez received the 3rd place speaker award and Sansom received the 8th place speaker award in the varsity division.
Fresno State also had a team in the novice division. Nick Mirza and Correll Vaughn won three of their six preliminary round. Vaughn received the 5th place speaker award in the novice division. Mirza and Vaughn finished in 9th place in the novice division and narrowly missed the elimination rounds. The last seat to make it into the elimination rounds was the 8th place.
