Fresno State was a very different place in the 1920s, especially in the composition of the faculty.
With a largely male faculty, an organization for their wives was formed in 1925 as the Faculty Wives Club. But as demographics at the University changed over the years, the club did too. It became the California State University, Fresno Women’s Association, with membership open to all women affiliated with the University, including faculty, staff, alumnae and wives of active or past faculty members and administrators.
Liz Shields, its current president, says the association is dedicated to promoting friendship among its members, assisting Fresno State with its programs, supporting women’s social issues and furthering education by giving financial assistance to students.
As one of the University’s oldest support groups, the organization’s mission to support the University includes recognition of outstanding faculty and staff, student scholarships and participation in on-campus activities such the Women’s Campus Connection, said Shields.

One of the Women’s Association signature events is its semi-annual book giveaway for students.
The next giveaway is 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17, in the Free Speech Area. Books, magazines and greeting cards donated by community, friends and neighbors will be available.
The Association awards $1,000 scholarships to four students each year. And starting three years ago, Leadership Awards of $500 have been presented to honor women faculty and staff who have demonstrated achievement and exceptional leadership within their department, school or college and the University.
