Emanuel Alcala (Central Valley Health Policy Institute) was selected as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Research Scholar, making him one of only 40 students nationwide admitted into the class. Alcala, currently a second-year public health doctoral student at U.C. Merced, will use his fellowship to expand his research on pediatric asthma hospitalizations in the San Joaquin Valley. Iran Barrera (Social Work Education) was selected to attend Kaiser Permanente's Institute for Health Policy forum on Advancing Mental Health and Wellness, held on Nov. 6th in Washington, D.C. Barrera, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Interdisciplinary Research Leader, joined other leaders across sectors to re-examine the challenges faced in the mental health system.
