In their respective first years, head football coach Jeff Tedford and head wrestling coach Troy Steiner both saw the Red Wave rally around their programs. So much so, it was of national status as both made NCAA top 10 attendance lists this spring.
The football program made the list for largest average attendance increase from the previous year in the 2017 NCAA Football attendance report. Fresno State ranked No. 7 in the Football Bowl Subdivision for the greatest jump in attendance from the previous year, increasing by an average of 5,139 fans per game in 2017.
In each of their six home football games, the Bulldogs averaged 30,632 fans last season versus 25,493 in 2016. Looking back through the past few years, it's the highest average since 2014, when Bulldog Stadium averaged 34,876.
In wrestling’s first year back as a program after an 11-year hiatus, the program made a national statement in its return finishing the 2017-18 season ranked No. 5 in the nation in home attendance with an average home attendance of 4,566 at the Save Mart Center in the 'Dogs six home duals.
The 'Dogs had at least 3,700 Red Wave supporters at all six home duals and over 4,000 at four of the six duals. The home opener against No. 14 Illinois on Nov. 17 was attended by 6,840 at the Save Mart Center for the third-largest attended dual in Fresno State program history.
