Diana Herrington, age 66, a full-time lecturer in the Department of Mathematics, passed away May 17 at St. Agnes Hospital after transport from her mathematics classroom on campus.
An influential advocate for mathematics education statewide, Diana taught over 100 liberal studies and credential students this semester.
"She is a blue ribbon presidential award winner in the field of teaching mathematics. She has a theorem named after her at NASA," said Alice Keeler, lecturer for the Curriculum and Instruction Department and Diana’s coauthor on the recently published book, Teaching Math with Google Apps. "She has been doing some ground-breaking innovative work in teaching Math 10A and Math 10B here at Fresno State.”
Diana loved what she taught and shared her enthusiasm with her students.
Beyond the classroom, she was a member of the California Teacher Advisory Council, which is a part of the California Council of Science and Technology. She was the state coordinator of mathematics for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
Diana was also active in the San Joaquin Valley Mathematics Project, serving as co-director in the 1990s.
Diana is survived by her husband Ken, a retired teacher of mathematics at Grant Middle School in Reedley, and daughter Kendia, a chemistry teacher at Buchanan High School.
