Scott Sailor (Kinesiology) spoke before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation on the topic of “Current Issues in American Sports: Protecting the Health and Safety of American Athletes." The hearing examined issues under the committee's sports jurisdiction, including efforts to promote athlete safety, anti-doping and prevent opioid abuse among athletes. In addition to being chair and professor of the Department of Kinesiology, Sailor is also president of the National Athletic Trainers' Association.
Shirley Melikian Armbruster, associate vice president for University Communications, received the 2017 Jim Tucker Media Service Award presented by the Department of Media, Communications and Journalism for her journalistic and communications accomplishments.
The award was established in 2004 as a tribute to Jim Tucker’s decades of service to the department as a professor and chair. The award honors a media professional in or from the San Joaquin Valley.

Kristin Carraway (Social Work Title IV-E) received her master’s degree in Public Health with an emphasis in Health Promotion from Fresno State. She was also a nominee for the College of Health and Human Services Graduate Dean’s Medalist Award. Congratulations, Kristin!
Pilar De La Cruz-Reyes (Central California Center for Excellence in Nursing) traveled to Havana, Cuba with a group of 17 other California Nurse Leaders to learn about healthcare in that region. She, along with her colleagues, toured hospitals, nursing schools, public healthcare facilities and daycare centers for the elderly. The group was invited by the Cuban Nurses Association to explore healthcare in Cuba.
Liz Garvin (Development Office) passed her certification test on May 18 and now holds the title "Certified Gift Planning Professional."
Michael Mahoney (Recreation Administration) was the primary researcher and author of “Analysis of Venue Attributes: An Application of Importance, Performance at A Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour Event” — a research article published in the Hong Kong Recreation Review, Vol. 29. Contributing authors were Kara Zografos (Public Health) and Sam Lankford (Recreation Administration).
Cher Teng (Bee) Yang and Chayeng Xiong (both Social Work) presented at the 18th Hmong National Development Conference on "How bilingual are you? Training the next generation of Hmong helping professionals". The conference is the largest national conference for Hmong Americans in the U.S.
Dr. Khang Tran (Mathematics) has recently returned from South Korea, where he delivered a week-long series of invited lectures on the zero distribution of polynomials generated by certain types of functions. Professor Tran’s research results in this area earned him the invitation to the National Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Sungkyunkwan University, where a group of mathematicians are working on combinatorial aspects of some related problems. Professor Tran is looking forward to collaborating with his new Korean colleagues in the future.
