Kinesiology student Juan-Carlos Silva learned that helping people in need can bring light to a dark situation.
He served with Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society, in Visalia. Relay for Life raises awareness and funds for the families of those who have lost their lives to cancer, as well as those who currently have cancer.
"The whole idea is that everything counts," Juan-Carlos said. "No matter how small your act of kindness, it can make a big difference."
During the luminaria ceremony, participants lit candles inside paper bags to honor every life touched by cancer. Hundreds of bags lit the path. During a moment of silence, people stopped walking and watched; some prayed.
"People were crying as everyone silently prayed and honored their loved ones," he said.
