In a celebration of academic excellence and achievement, the Fresno State chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi inducted 119 student scholars and four honorary members during a May 4 ceremony at the Satellite Student Union.
The honorary inductees recognized for their distinguished contributions to scholarship, leadership and service were:
- Dr. Amber Crowell, professor, Department of Sociology.
- Kathy Yarmo, staff, Student Health and Counseling Center.
- Dr. Alam Hasson, vice provost.
- Jerry Dyer, 26th mayor of the City of Fresno and Fresno State alumnus.
Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society, recognizing academic excellence across all fields of higher education. Membership is by invitation only and is extended to the top 7.5% of juniors and the top 10% of seniors and graduate students. Faculty, administrators, staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction may also be invited to join.
Founded in 1897 and headquartered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Phi Kappa Phi has chapters at more than 300 colleges and universities in North America and the Philippines. Fresno State’s Chapter 62 was established in 1953 and has since initiated more than 10,000 students, faculty, staff and alumni. Today, more than 950 members are actively affiliated with the Fresno State chapter.
The chapter has earned national recognition for its excellence and impact. Most notably, the Fresno State chapter received Phi Kappa Phi’s prestigious Circle of Excellence Platinum Status — the highest honor awarded to chapters nationwide — in recognition of outstanding chapter operations, member engagement and commitment to academic excellence.
“Phi Kappa Phi represents the very best of Fresno State’s academic community,” said Dr. Aly M. Tawfik, president of the Fresno State Phi Kappa Phi Board of Directors. “Our newest inductees exemplify scholarship, leadership and service and we are proud to recognize their accomplishments and future potential.”
