Dr. Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval was all smiles as he entered the Table Mountain Rancheria Reading Room holding his wife’s hand and leading their two sons to the podium to speak at his first news conference as president of Fresno State.
The California State University Board of Trustees on May 19 appointed Jiménez-Sandoval to serve as the ninth president of California State University, Fresno. He previously served as interim president of Fresno State.
He marveled at how a young boy from Fowler, who couldn’t speak English when he arrived from Mexico with his family, could make it this far. And he dedicated this moment to the Central Valley community who he has so proudly connected with over the years and served.
“From providing world-class, transformational educational opportunities, to conducting cutting-edge research, to uniting our entire community in support of athletic teams, Fresno State makes a profound impact on the entire Central Valley," Jiménez-Sandoval said. “It is an honor to be chosen to lead this premier university, which opens doors of opportunities for our talented students and improves the quality of life for everyone in the Valley. I look forward to working together with our dynamic faculty, committed staff, talented students and innovative community partners to increase the life-changing opportunities that a Fresno State education provides."
His family learned about the appointment while sitting down to dinner. His phone rang and he jumped up and out of the room to take the call, his family said. Then, they heard laughs and happy sounds.
“We’re very excited. It’s overwhelming in a good way,” said Dr. Mariana Anagnostopoulos, the president's wife and professor of philosophy in the College of Arts and Humanities.
